« Ballet héroïque », Les Indes Galantes sont le deuxième ouvrage lyrique de Rameau et le premier de ses six opéras-ballets. Le spectacle est total, l’exotisme est un prétexte à introduire décors et costumes prodigieux – et totalement déconnectés des peuples évoqués. Quant à la musique, c’est un véritable triomphe pour Rameau : la subtilité et l’inventivité de son écriture continuent de nous éblouir ; sa maitrise raffinée et savante de l’harmonie, en permanente rechercher de la perfection, trouvent ici un aboutissement idéal.
