It is part of the \u2018Cavalli tetralogy\u2019 (with <em>Erismena<\/em>, <em>Eliogabalo<\/em> and <em>Elena<\/em>) presented by Leonardo Garc\u00eda Alarc\u00f3n, who has become Cavalli\u2019s ambassador in recent years. <em>Il Giasone<\/em>, an opera with a prologue and three acts, premiered on 5 January 1649. It alternates between tragedy and buffoonery and does not attempt to remain faithful to the legend of Jason and Medea.  <\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The fourth work in the Cavalli tetralogy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Il Giasone<\/em> premiered in Venice during Carnival. It presents a mosaic of contrasting episodes, rich in musical emotion. Cavalli&#8217;s music is remarkably evocative and there is a subtle balance between song and speech. Comedy, tragedy and the supernatural rub shoulders and intermingle. Cavalli&#8217;s Lamenti are the apex of this work. Serena Sinigaglia&#8217;s staging is unapologetically burlesque and nutty, celebrating the work&#8217;s sensuality. According to Le Temps, &#8220;Cappella Mediterranea and Garc\u00eda Alarc\u00f3n display a finesse, lightness and alacrity ideally suited to the demands of the score. With an instrumental flavour that is round and rich, they successfully convey the playfulness, melodic freshness and harmonic tensions of this work. Drama and intoxication are artfully blended. The central burlesque tone gives way to some fine emotional and poetic moments, including the ethereal scene where Medea and Jason sleep in the third act. [&#8230;] In the pit, Leonardo Garcia Alarc\u00f3n delights us once again, directing Capella Mediterranea with suppleness, richness and clarity. Cavalli is always attentive to the theatrical dimension of the work. Venetian opera is not a cantar recitando (as would be the case with opera seria), but a recitar cantando, which favours the lively, varied rhythm of theatre. In fact, a few years later, playwright Jacopo Cicognini adapted the libretto of <em>Giasone<\/em> into a comic drama in prose. Nevertheless, music still dialogues with the text and builds upon its emotional impact in the many lamenti (sung by Procri in <em>Gli amori di Apollo e Dafne<\/em>, Cassandra in <em>Didone<\/em>, Egisto in the opera of the same name, and Alessandro in <em>Eliogabalo<\/em>), invocations and scenes of fury (by Ericlea in <em>Virt\u00f9 dei strali d&#8217;amore<\/em>, Medea in <em>Giasone<\/em>, and Nerea in <em>La Rosinda<\/em>) and mad scenes (in <em>Egisto<\/em> and <em>Eritrea<\/em>), an operatic topos that had a long future ahead of it. Cavalli&#8217;s music is incredibly supple and expressive, nestling in every nook and cranny of the text. Nevertheless, the musical discourse still has a certain autonomy. Cavalli treated some recitatives as arias and transformed closed poetic forms into simple recitatives, for example, in <em>L\u2019Orione<\/em> (Milan, 1653). Cavalli\u2019s music is reminiscent of the dreamlike prologue to Gli Amori d&#8217;Apollo, the first Baroque lyric masterpiece. It keeps the spectator captive in a dream throughout the whole performance. One could almost say that the Venetian composer succeeded in uncovering the deeper meaning of poetry, displaying the eloquence that was praised by Cicero.
