Joan Manuel Serrat\u2019s compositions are an integral part of Spanish and South American culture. Mediterr\u00e1neo<\/em> was voted Song of the Century in Spain. Mediterr\u00e1neo, voted \u201cSong of the Century\u201d in Spain, and all of Joan Manuel Serrat’s work are part of Spanish culture, as well as that of the U.S.A. Steeped in Serrat’s poetic texts, Leonardo Garc\u00eda-Alarc\u00f3n sets them in resonance with the great pieces of the Golden Age.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

“Joan Manuel Serrat, around whom we have built this mixed program, inevitably takes me back to my childhood in Argentina, to emotional moments shared with my family on Sundays at my Uncle Alberto’s: we listened to both Serrat and Beethoven, to <\/em>Bach’s St Matthew Passion and <\/em>Mozart’s Requiem, to Chopin waltzes or <\/em>Children’s Scenes. . These shared moments brought us children <\/em>into contact with poetry and music and that experience is still very much alive in me today.<\/em><\/p>\nLeonardo Garc\u00eda-Alarc\u00f3n<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

A eclectic Mediterranean programme<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSerrat usually sings his songs himself. It is rare to hear them performed by others. Since the music and the performer are inseparable, it was difficult for us to interpret his songs. We therefore decided to transpose them for other tessituras. Some were even transformed into 16th century-style polyphonic madrigals. The orchestration features 17th century instruments like the recorder, cornet, violin, viola da gamba, cello, lute, harp, harpsichord and organ, along with percussion and a double bass. Our singer, Maria Hinojosa Montenegro, is from the Barcelona region. She introduced us to many Catalan songs and told us about the love that the people of Catalonia still have for Serrat. Most of our singers and musicians were not familiar with Serrat, but as the days went on, they made his music their own. Our goal is to show audiences that Serrat has universal appeal and is not just for Spanish speakers.\u201d Leonardo Garc\u00eda-Alarc\u00f3n<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
