The work of Falvetti, a Sicilian composer, rubs shoulders with <em>Lamentazione<\/em> by Colonna, the choirmaster of Bologna\u2019s Cathedral. The second part of the programme is dedicated to Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00edn&#8217;s <em>tonos humanos<\/em>, which is one of the finest secular vocal compositions of 17th-century Spain. Mar\u00edn was one of the most intriguing figures of his time. He was ordained in Rome in 1644, then joined the chapel of the Royal Monastery of La Encarnaci\u00f3n in Madrid as a tenor. He was accused of theft in 1654 and murder in 1656, and was arrested, tortured, laicised and imprisoned. The Madrid court (&#8220;court of miracles&#8221; under the Habsburgs) was used to these kinds of indiscretions and did not hold it against him. In due course, it welcomed a \u201cpenitent\u201d Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00edn who, after several years of exile and pilgrimage, led an exemplary life until his death on 8 March 1699. This extravagant life seems a far stretch from the serenity of his &#8216;tonos&#8217;, which are astonishingly rich in melody and feature a remarkable rhythmic guitar accompaniment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-bottom is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pasiones de Espa\u00f1a - Mariana Flores &amp;
