The Regent\u2019s Opera<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 1712, the king’s musicians performed a new opera in the Galerie des cerfs at Ch\u00e2teau Fontainebleau. The work was entitled La J\u00e9rusalem D\u00e9livr\u00e9e<\/em>. It was composed by a man who was second only to the king himself: Duke Philippe d’Orl\u00e9ans, the future Regent of France. D\u2019Orl\u00e9ans was a talented musician who had studied under Charpentier and Campra. In 1700, he appointed Gervais as his Master of Music, and it was under the latter\u2019s guidance that he composed three tragedies set to music, including J\u00e9rusalem<\/em>The opera, also known as ” la suite d\u2019Armide<\/em> \u201d (the follow-up to Armide), features two familiar pairs of chivalrous heroes: Renaud and Armide from Lully\u2019s Armide, and Tancr\u00e8de and Herminie from Campra\u2019s Tancr\u00e8de. D’Orl\u00e9ans was not only a patron of the arts. He was truly a gifted composer. Now one of his major works can be rediscovered in this energetic interpretation by Leonardo Garc\u00eda Alarc\u00f3n, which features first-class soloists and the virtuoso Cappella Mediterranea.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Musique by Philippe d\u2019Orl\u00e9ans (1674-1723) and Charles-Hubert Gervais (1671-1744) – Libretto by Hilaire-Bernard de Requeleyne, the Baron of Longepierre (1659-1731)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspired by Torquato Tasso’s Gerusalemme liberata<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opera with a prologue and five acts set to a libretto by Hilaire-Bernard Requeleyne that was inspired by Tasse’s La Gerusalemme liberata. First performed at Fontainebleau in 1704.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
