Claudio Monteverdi’s work is one of the most extraordinary laboratory of human emotions in all of music history. The composer pushed the boundaries of form in ways that roused the emotions and anger of his contemporaries. In 2017, in celebration of his 450th birthday, we had the opportunity to explore his work and highlight the contemporary force of his musical language. Leonardo Garc\u00eda Alarc\u00f3n presented audiences with a programme that revolved around the moral lessons at the heart of Monteverdi’s repertoire.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat Music\/Artistic Leonardo Garc\u00eda Alarc\u00f3n accomplished had the same audacity as Monteverdi himself in his \u201cThird Practice\u201d toward the end of his life. Maestro Alarc\u00f3n turned a dozen-odd madrigals, arias, \u201csung recitatives\u201d and choruses into a kind of opera whose storyline was not a story. It was an opera of Monteverdi emotions.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The theatre of human passions <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cappella Mediterranea gives audiences the chance to explore how one man\u2019s soul could be split between the tormented love of his madrigals, the pure nobility of l\u2019Orfeo<\/em>the novelty of the Vespro<\/em>, the conservatism and faith of his a cappella masses and ‘moral’ madrigals, the spirit of adventure and chastity behind l\u2019Ulisse<\/em> , and finally, one of the most amoral pieces in the history of music, L\u2019Incoronazione di Poppea.<\/em>. To make sense of this juxtaposition of ideas and passions, we have devised a programme driven by the allegorical forces that were very much present in the minds and imaginations of Italians in the 17th century: the seven deadly sins and seven virtues. The deadly sins of the Catholic religion, cited by Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) and enumerated by Pope Gregory (540-604), fueled the imagination of artists over the centuries, including Dante and Leonardo Da Vinci. This programme invites listeners to reflect on the nature of emotions through a composer who understood the origins of human passions and used music to transcend and sublimate them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
