The Grand Th\u00e9\u00e2tre is delighted to welcome Rameau\u2019s masterpiece to its stage for the first time, conducted by the practically Genevan Leonardo Garc\u00eda Alarc\u00f3n with Cappella Mediterranea. It was with this opera-ballet that the Grand Th\u00e9\u00e2tre inaugurated a new era of collaboration between its opera stage and its ballet company. This called for a production in which dance and song were almost entirely on an equal footing, and Les Indes galantes<\/em> certainly delivered. The young choreographer Demis Volpi has been entrusted with the choreography for this production, whilst Lydia Steier is in charge of the staging.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A first at the Grand Th\u00e9\u00e2tre<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Rameau composed this masterpiece of the \u2018opera-ballet\u2019 genre, whose light-hearted nature generously interweaves sung passages with danced interludes. At the time, all distant shores were \u2018Indies\u2019 \u2013 Western, Eastern, Asian, American \u2013 and \u2018galant\u2019 had far more the meaning of \u2018erotic\u2019 than of \u2018courteous\u2019. Louis Fuzelier, the librettist of Les Indes galantes, drew inspiration from the era\u2019s fascination with travelogues. The theme of his plot can be summed up quite simply: Love reigns supreme, even in the most exotic climes. This common thread ties the four tales together.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
